Gen. George Washington did not torture. At the time of the Revolutionary War we enshrined rights that made us "less safe" against Colonists loyal to England. No cruel punishment, no dention with a judge, jury and calling witnesses. Doesn't sound like a winning stratagy. We have survived because of our higher standards not because of them.
